2023 is a monumental year for Gilbert as we celebrate 200 years! It’s also the 50th anniversary of ‘THAT try’!

On the 27th January 1973, the Barbarians hosted New Zealand in front of 50,000 spectators. Within the opening minutes, famous Welsh scrum-half Sir Gareth Edwards went over for a try. This was simply iconic.

It began with Phil Bennett picking up the ball on his own 5-metre line, jinking past several All Blacks players before offloading to John Williams; further superb offloading between forwards and backs ended with Gareth Edwards receiving the ball on the All Blacks 22 and running in the famous score down the touchline.

"𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙝 𝙀𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨, 𝙖 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚!” Those were the famous words spoken by Cliff Morgan. Today, 50 years on, they still resonate with so many rugby fans around the world.

It was to set the standard for a thrilling game of rugby that included six tries in total and was played in a superb spirit, which we now commonly know as the 'Barbarians Spirit'. The result was a famous 23-11 win for the Barbarians.

Today, that unforgettable moment is known as one of the greatest tries in rugby and will loved by rugby fans for many years to come.
